Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Senior Class Gift?
Senior Class Gift is the beginning of a lifelong tradition of annually supporting the University of Chicago. Our giving is a way to recognize our commitment to the College and creates a legacy by supporting future College students.

Why are we giving to these areas?
These funds support what we think are the most key areas of student life:

  • College Fund: The College Fund supports virtually every program on campus: financial aid, study abroad, small class sizes, you name it! UChicago pledges to meet 100% of demonstrated need for every undergraduate on campus. The average University of Chicago aid applicant receives $37,500 in scholarships each yearMore than 550 students studied abroad last year in 49 different programs in 22 countries. Let's continue these great programs for years to come.
  • Odyssey Scholarships:! Over 1,000 students each year received Odyssey scholarships. These students would not have been able to attend without the student and alumni support of this scholarship program.
  • The Dean's Fund for Student Life: The Dean's Fund allows students and RSOs extra funding for special programs and events. The Annual Sex Week is a result of the Dean's Fund, along with grants to attend conferences, and conduct research.
  • Metcalf Internships: More than 4000 students have participated in the College's internship program since it began 20 years ago.
What is our goal?
This year, our goal is to have 1,000 seniors donate to our class gift. The Class of 2014 holds the record with 1,015 donors - we're confident that we can exceed our goal and do better!

How much should I give?
Because we focus on participation, the act of giving is what's important. In honor of our class, we suggest a gift of $20.18. A gift of any size will make a big impact.

Why does SCG support the College and not a structural object?

The College Fund benefits us, the students, directly. Student opportunities are more important than any bench or clock. Whatever need may arise, your gift will be there to help.

What are the giving records?
At UChicago, our class gifts keep getting bigger and better. Check out the records below!

  • Participation Record: The Class of 2014 achieved 82% participation!
  • Donor Record: The Class of 2014 secured an impressive 1,015 gifts!

Isn't my tuition enough?
Tuition covers the day-to-day expenses for only half a school year. Tuition runs out in late February and that's when philanthropic support kicks in. Tuition also doesn't allow for any growth. If UChicago wants to start a new pre-professional program, support an innovative student project, or expand student life opportunities, philanthropy makes it possible.

How do I become involved?
Come to Class of 2018 events! Like us on Facebook! And most importantly, make your gift! You can give online right now at: seniorclassgift.uchicago.edu/give.

What about after we graduate?
Senior Class Gift is just our first step in the alumni community. We often don't realize that our relationship with the University will last the rest of our lives. Alumni continue to contribute to undergraduate experiences daily, through volunteering their time and making financial gifts. Our class will join this tradition of philanthropy once we graduate.
